On the data of Geophysical Survey of RAS for the period from January 1 till August 11, 1999 there were more than 500 earthquakes in Caucasus with magnitude M more than 2-2.5 and 24 of them were felt in the sites around with the intensity 2-3 and more MKS. East part of Caucasus was the most seismic active. It is first of all area concerning territory of Republic Dagestan. Nearly 90% of all registered earthquakes of Caucasus happened in this area in 1999. Two strong earthquakes with magnitudes 5.6 and 5.1 have taken place here on January 31 and February 21, 1999, concerning to one origin area remote approximately 50 km to the west from Makhachkala. They were felt practically in all territory of Dagestan, the maximal thrusts were marked in cities Buinaksk, Kizilurt and Makhachkala and have made about 5-6 MSK. These earthquakes have been accompanied with numerous aftershocks. They were the strongest earthquakes of this region for the last 29 years after destructive Dagestan earthquake happened on May 14 1970 with М=6.6. Seismic process in this origin area continues and nowadays. The last significant event here with magnitude 4.2 has happened on August 10 at 22 hours 21 minutes of Moscow time. In addition a small seismic activity was registered in Dagestan in the area of Caspian Sea. The earthquakes with magnitudes not more than М=4.3 have been registered here, the strongest one (on January 26) was felt in Derbent town Дербенте with intensity 3 MSK. On June 4 the strong earthquake with magnitude M=5 has happened at the south of the East part of Caucasus in Azerbaijan. It was felt on the broad territory of Caucasus, in numerous sites of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Dagestan and Stavropol region with intensities from 4-5 to 2 MSK. Seismic energy output continued in the central part of Caucasus in the origin area of the strong Racha-Djava earthquake, which happened there in 1991. The strongest earthquakes of this year did not exceeded magnitude М=4. Two earthquakes has happened in the west part of Caucasus on August 7 and 8 in the water space area of Black Sea with magnitudes 3.7 and 3.9 respectively. They were felt in sea shore towns Anapa and Novorossisk with intensities up to 2-3 MSK. Seismic situation in the rest of the Caucasus areas stayed at the average (background) level.
