Information message about the earthquake in the North of Peru on September 26, 2005

On September 26, 2005 the strong earthquake has happened in the Northern part of Peru at 01:55 GMT (05:55 Moscow time) with magnitude М=7.0. Epicenter of this earthquake was located in 675 km to the North from Peru capital Lima. Victims were available.
Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 45 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 19 stations, accurate processing - with data 28 stations.
Fig. 1 presents fragments of records for this earthquake obtained from digital stations Tiksi (delta 112 degrees), Kislovodsk (delta 114 degrees), Magadan (delta 115 degrees), Arti (delta 118 degrees), Yakutsk (delta 120 degrees). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records for this earthquake obtained from digital stations Borovoe (delta 125 градусов), South-Sakhalinsk (delta 127 degrees), Kurchatov (delta 130 degrees), Ala-Archa (delta 135 degrees), Vladivistok (delta 135 degrees).

  • Epicenter
From information of Geophysical Institute of Peru epicenter of this underground strike was located not far away from Moyobamba town, this is 675 km. To the North from Peru capital Lima. Location of epicenter is shown on fig.3 (this map is downloaded from site of the US Geological Service at http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eq_depot/2005/)

    Macroseismic manifestations
After preliminary investigation it was found that four persons have been killed and nearly 20 houses destroyed. The area of this earthquake is left without electricity and telephone communication.
    Historical records
From the map of seismicity and the data of Geophysical Institute of Peru it is possible to characterize this region as the are of rather strong seismic activity within the last 15 years (fig.4). However the earthquakes with magnitudes 7 and more have not been registered here, the strongest earthquakes which happened close to this area until the year 1959 have been registered in 1619 and 1946 at 300 – 400 km to the South-West (fig.5, red circle depicts epicenter of this reported earthquake)

Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake
Focal mechanism solutions for the earthquake in Peru on September 26, 2005 are obtained in NEIC (http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eq_depot/2005/eq_050926_dlad/neic_dlad_q.html) and presented in table 2 and figure 6 in stereographical projection, low hemisphere. The motion in origin has happened under the action of expansion strengths, type of the motion along both planes – normal. Both nodal planes have North-Western-South-Eastern spread direction corresponding with orientation of the mountain ridge.
