Information message about the strong earthquake in India, January 3, 2016

The strong earthquake with M=6.5 has occurred on January 3, 2016 at 23:05 GMT (January 4 at 02:05 Moscow time) in India.
Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 10 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 28 stations, accurate processing - with data 61 stations.
     Fig. 1 presents fragments of records ontained from digital stations Ala-Archa (∆ 23.8º), Dzhazator (∆ 25.3º), Ulaanbaatar (∆ 25.3º), Kurchatov (∆ 28.3º), Zalesovo Group (∆ 29.8º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records ontained from digital stations Borovoye (∆ 33.2º), Arti (∆ 40.5º), Erimo (∆ 44.1º), Yakutsk (∆ 44.4º), Nalchik (∆ 44.7º).

  • Epicenter
Fig. 3 presents with red star the epicenter of this earthquake, its origin was located at the north-east of India, in the region Myanmar - India border region at a depth of 50 km, 29 km W of Imphal, India, 105 km S-S-W of Kohima, India, 240 km N of Hakha, Myanmar and 352 km E-N-E of Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh.

    Macroseismic manifestations
According to ITAR-TASS 11 persons were killed, more than 200 people were affected. Three killed persons are residents of Bangladesh, where this earthquake affected a few regions, including Сapital Сity Dhaka. The greatest damage was caused to the city of Imphal. There damaged power lines, no telephone contact, destroyed several dozen homes. Fig. 4, was obtained from USGS NEIC, it presents USGS Community Internet Intensity Map made by 883 responses in 157 cities.

    Figure 4
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake
Focal mechanism solution of the origin was calculated in IPC GS RAS with signs of initial arrivals of P waves at 68 stations, including 43 of them which registered compression waves (plus signs) and 25 of them which registered tensile waves (minus signs). These stations are located in the interval of epicentral distances 5.3–94º and in azimuthal sector Az=13-348º. Mechanism of the origin in stereograthical projection at the lower hemisphere is shown at fig. 5, elements of mechanism are presented in table 2. Figures 6,7 present focal mechanism solutions obtained in USGS NEIC with W-phase Moment Tensor (Mww) and in Quick CMT Catalog Center, USA obtained with CMT technique. All solution obtained by various centers are close. This earthquake has occurred under prevailing action of compression stresses oriented south-west, while tensile stresses are oriented north-west. Nodal plane NP1 in all solutions is almost vertical (DP=74-81º), nodal plane NP2 is more flat (DP=45-57º). The plane NP1 in all solutions strikes east (STK=74-78º), the plane NP2 strikes north-west (STK=337-339º). The type of motion along steeply dipping plane NP1 – left lateral slip (with reverse fault components), for NP2 – this is rigt lateral slip (with reverse fault components). Seismic moment of the earthquake obtained in IPC GS RAS with Р waves spectra at station «Obninsk» (∆51.29º), Мо=2.0*10**19 N*m, Mw=6.8; according to USGS NEIC – Mo=1.55*10**19 N*m, Mw=6.7; according to СМТ – Mo=1.48*10**19 N*m, Mw=6.7.
