Information message about the sensitive earthquake in Romania November 22, 2014

The sensitive earthquake M=5.5 has occurred on November 22, 2014 at 19:14 GMT (22:14 Moscow time) in Romania.
Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 9 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Malin Array Point (∆ 5º), Apeiranthos of Naxos (∆ 9.1º), Kasperske Hory (∆ 9.8º), Obninsk (∆ 11º), Kislovodsk (∆ 11.1º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Vasula (∆ 12.6º), Garni (∆ 14.1º), Arti (∆ 22.1º), Borovoe (∆ 28.5º), Kurchatov (∆ 34º).

  • Epicenter
Fig. 3 presents with red star epicenter of this earthquake, its origin was located on the territory of Romania at the depth of 40 km, 20 km N of Focsani, Romania, 174 km S-W of Kishinev, the Capital of Moldova, 182 km N-E of Bucharest, the Capital of Romania, and 280 km W-S-W of Odessa, Ukraine.

    Macroseismic manifestations
The earthquake was felt in Romania and neighboring countries: Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine. In Bulgaria this earthquake was felt by residents of Ruse, Varna, Pleven, Dobrich, Shumen, Silistra, Sevlievo, Nessebar, Burgas, Lovech, Tutrakan, Targovishte, Plovdiv, Pazardzhik. In the southern regions of Ukraine the earthquake was felt in Odessa, Krivoy Rog, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Irpen and even in several districts of Kiev. According to GS RAS this earthquake was felt in Kishinev with intensities 4-5 MSK. Fig. 4 was obtained from USGS NEIC , it presents USGS Community Internet Community Map, based on 79 responses in 43 cities.

    Historical records
The last significant earthquake in this region was registered on October 6, 2013 with М=5.5 it was located 60 km W-S-W of the current event.
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake
Focal mechanism was obtained in IPC GS RAS with signs of initial arrivals of P-waves at 60 stations, including 29 stations which registered compression waves (plus signs) and 31 stations which registered expansion waves (minus signs). These stations are located in the interval of epicentral distances of 1–95º and in azimuth sector of Az=7-359º. Focal mechanism solution in stereographic projection at the lower hemisphere is presented at fig. 5, elements of mechanism are presented in table 2. Fig. 6, 7 present focal mechanism solutions obtained in USGS NEIC with W-phase Moment Tensor (Mww) technique and in Quick CMT Center obtained with CMT technique. These solutions are identical. In case of GS RAS the motion has occurred under the action of tensile stresses oriented to the north, in case of USGS NEIC and Quick CMT this was under the action of the same stresses exactly oriented north-west. Nodal planes NP1 strike south-west (STK=246-251º) and are flat DP=18º and steeply dipping DP=47-58º. Nodal planes NP2 strike south-east STK=138-148º and are almost vertical - DP=58-84º. The type of motion for NP1 – right lateral slips, for NP2 – left lateral slips with fault components. Seismic moment earthqake was obtained in IPC GS RAS with spectra of P waves registered at «Talaya» (∆48.56º) station, it makes Мо=3.5*10**17 N*m, Mw=5.7, according to USGS NEIC – Mo=2.57*10**17 N*m, Mw=5.5, according to Quick CMT Mo=3.79*10**17 N*m, Mw=5.7.
