Information message about seinsitive earthquake in Krasnodar Region on December 10, 2012

The sensitive earthquake with M=4.9 has occurred on December 10, 2012 at 16:56 GMT (20:56 Moscow time) in Krasnodar Region of Russia.
Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 23 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 27 stations, accurate processing - with data 40 stations.
      Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Vozrozhdenie (∆ 0.7º), Tuapse (∆ 1.5º), Lazorevskoe (∆ 1.8º), Sochi (∆ 2.2º), Krasnaya Polyana (∆ 2.4º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Kislovodsk (∆ 3.9º), Gofitskoe (∆ 3.9º), Neitrino (∆ 4.2º), Nalchik (∆ 4.6º), Dishne-Vedeno (∆ 6.6º).

Fig. 3 presents with red star epicenter of this earthaquake, which origin was located on the territory of Krasnodar Region at the depth of 15 km, 24 km N-E of Anapa, 40 km N-W of Novorossiysk and 115 km W of Krasnodar.

    Macroseismic manifestations
In accordance with GS RAS this earthquake was felt: in Novorossiysk, Krymsk, Abinsk, Nizhnebakanskaya with intensity 5 MSK, in Sukko, Anapa, Utrishe with intensity 4-5 MSK, in Yurovka, Dzhiginka with intensity 4 MSK, in Krasnodar, Gelendzhik, Slavyansk-na-Kubani with intensity 3-4 MSK, in Sochi with intensity 3 MSK (fig.4).

    Historical records
This earthquake has occurred in seismic tectonic area located between Black Sea rupture at the south-west and Akhtirsk rupture at the north, between Kerch channel at the west and Novorossiysk cross sectional rupture at the east. This region for a long time is known for the earthquakes with M=4.5-5.8 located in the center of the area with intensity 7 and 6-7 MSK (fig. 5). Most significant of them were Nizhnekubansk earthquake on 09.10.1879 with М=5.7, Anapa earthquake on 12.07.1966 with М=5.8, Nizhnekubansk -II earthquake on 09.11.2002 with М=4.6. The last one caused macroseismic effect with intensity 6 MSK in the epicenter, after that within 10 years there were not registered significant seismic activity here. The marks on the fig. 5: 1- magnitude of the earthquake, 2- living place, 3 – state border of RF.

    Figure 5
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake
Focal mechanism solution of this earthquake which occurred on December 10, 2012 at 16:56 was calculated in IPC GS RAS with signs of initial arrivals of P waves at 23 stations including 17 which registered the waves of compression (plus signs) and 6 which registered the waves of expansion (minus signs). These stations are located in the interval of epicenter distances 0.3–33º, most of them are at regional distances on the territory of Northern Caucasus. Along the azimuths these stations mainly are located in the first, second and fourth quadrants relative to the epicenter, in the third quadrant it was possible to determine the sign at the record of only one station and ISP, located in Turkey. Focal mechanism solutions in stereographic projection at the lower hemisphere are shown at figure 6, elements of mechanism are presented in table 2. In accordance with this solution the earthquake has occurred in conditions of prevailing forces of expansion oriented to the north, axis of compression was oriented to the west. One nodal plane NP1 of steep declination (DP=75º) was oriented from north-west to south-east, the type of motion along it was presented by normal fault with left side slip component. Propagation of nodal plane NP2 – from north-east to south-west, type of motion – right side slip with components of normal fault. The earthquake has occurred in 3 minutes after the strong earthquake which occurred in Banda Sea area, thus the signs of initial motion at numerous stations were determined unreliably. This focal solution should be considered as preliminary, it requires to be determined more accurately after additional data acquisition. Seismic moment of this earthquake was obtained in IPC GS RAS with spectra of S-waves at «Anapa» station (∆=0.3º), it makes Мо=8.0*10**15 N*m. The value of moment magnitude Mw calculated in IPC GS RAS with Kanamori formula makes Mw=4.6.
