Information message about the strong earthquake in Sea of Okhotsk on August14, 2012

     The strong earthquake with M=7.1 has occurred on August 14, 2012 at 2:59 GMT (6:59 Moscow time) in Sea of Okhotsk.
     Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 17 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).
     Preliminary processing has been done with data from 22 stations, accurate processing - with data 44 stations.
     Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Kurilsk (∆ 4.9º), Severo-Kurilsk (∆ 7º), Kuldur (∆ 8.8º), Magadan (∆ 10.3º), Mys Shultsa (∆ 12.1º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Borovoe (∆ 44.9º), Arti (∆ 49.1º), Obninsk (∆ 59.7º), Kislovodsk (∆ 64.8º), Neitrino (∆ 65.3º).

  • Epicenter
         Fig.3 presents with red star epicenter of the earthquake which origin was located in Sea of Okhotsk 83 km off the east coast of Sakhalin Island at the depth 580 km, 170 km E-N-E of Poronaysk, 267 km S-E of Nogliki, 643 km S-S-W of Yuzhno-Kurilsk.

    Macroseismic manifestations
         In accordance with GS RAS data this earthquake was felt in: Poronaysk with intensity 3-4 MSK, in Makarov, Malokurilskoye, Tymovskoye, Pilvo - 3 MSK, in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Sovetskaya Gavan, Komsomolsk-na-Amure - 2-3 MSK, Nogliki, Honor, Yuzhno-Kurilsk, Shikotan - 2 MSK. The threat of a tsunami has not been announced.
