Information message on the earthquake in Kirov region on January 18, 2000

On January, 2000 the earthquake has happened in Kirov region in the join area between weak seismic East European platform and Ural. The fact of earthquake in this region is unique. According to data from "Specialized Catalogue" (publ. Kondorskaya N.V., Ulomov V.I.) there are no known events in this region with M>=3.5 (area with radius 200 km) since ancient times till now. [Update: Authors of this information message made mistake in it, as the specified above "Specialized catalogue" actually contains information, that on the territory of Kirov region there was an earthquake with M=5.0 and coordinates 58.5N and 50.0E on March 9, 1809. Thus, it is impossible to consider the earthquake on January 18, 2000 on territory of the Kirov region as unique.]
Data from 10 stations has been used in getting parameters of the origin. These stations are located in the interval of hypocentral distances between 3.8-57.7 degrees. Azimuth surround was uniform enough (from 14 to 330 degrees). Magnitude calculation was done along the dilatational wave with use of nomogram for getting of MPSP magnitude at regional distances. Average value of MPSP made 4.0 for 4 stations. Energy class K was calculated from formula of Rautian. Figure 1. contains the records of this earthquake made by two digital stations – Unva (UNVR) (Mining Institute of Perm scientific center of RAS) and Arti (ARU) filtered in frequency band 1-10 Hz. Main parameters of this earthquake are presented in table 1.

Discrepancy in coordinates of the hypocenter obtained by different services (except automatic service of Norwegian seismic service NORSAR) makes not more than 0.1 degree in latitude and not more than 0.5 degrees on longitude. Hypocenter location and positions of stations, which registered this event, are shown on figure 2.
