Information message on the earthquake in Dagestan on January 29, 2000

On January 29, 2000 at 2am Moscow time (January 28, 11pm GMT) the sensitive earthquake happened in Dagestan.
Parameters of this earthquake have been determined in Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey RAS in Obninsk both with use of station data obtained from Dagestan experimental methodical seismological party of GS RAS and with use of data from digital and analog stations of Central experimental methodical expedition of GS RAS.
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 4 stations, accurate processing - with data 7 stations.
At figure 1 the records of this earthquake are presented for three channels BHE, BHN, BHZ of digital station "Kislovodsk" (KIV), which is located at distance of 360km from hypocenter. Waveforms are obtained in IPC in a close to real time mode.

IPC GS RAS also has obtained information with parameters of this event from some seismological centers, these data are given in table 1:

Hypocenter of this earthquake was located at 50 km to the west from Mahachkala town. The earthquake was felt in Dubki place with intensity 4-5 MSK, in Kizilurt town – intensity 4 MSK, Mahachkala town – intensity 2 MSK. The origin was located in hypocentral zone of strong earthquakes happened last year in Dagestan. It is this area, where in 1999 nearly 90% of all registered earthquakes in Caucasus. Here on January 31 and on February 21, 1999 two strong earthquakes took place with magnitudes 5.6 and 5.1 respectively (see. Archive of messages February 21 and January 31 1999), they were felt almost on all territory of Dagestan, the strongest intensity for them was registered in towns Buinaksk, Kizilurt and Mahachkala with the values up to 5-6 MSK. Seismic process in this origin area is under way today.
