    Macroseismic manifestations
In accordance with mass media the half of the nearest to the earthquake Nura settlement was destroyed, this is 115 houses. More than 70 people were killed and hundreds injured. More accurate information will be obtained after the end of rescue works. This earthquake was felt in Tajik capital Dushanbe – with intensity 3-4, In Kazakh settlement Taraz – with intensity 3-4, in Alma Ata – with intensity 2-3.
    Historical records
Fig.5 presents the strongest earthquakes of Southern Tian Shan with М>=6 in accordance with "New catalogue of the strongest earthquakes of USSR territory " and Seismological bulletin of GS RAS (Obninsk). The earthquake on October 5 has happened in highly seismic active area of Southern Tian Shan. In this region there were registered numerous sensitive earthquakes with М>6: 18.12.1895, М=6.0 Io=5, 19.10.1903 М=6.2 Io=5, 1.12.1918 at 02-35 and at 10-35 with М=6.5, Io=5, 5.04.1943 with М=6.5, Io=5, 15.03.1944 with М=6, Io=5, 29.08.1963 with М=6.4, 11.05.1967 with М=6.3, Io=4. The most significant earthquake of Pamir area has occurred on 11.08.1974 with М=7.3, Io=6-7 and was accompanied with series of repeating shocks, some of them had magnitudes М=6.3 and 6.0. Epicentral zone of this strongest earthquake was located approximately at 20 km to the south from epicenter of the earthquake on October 5, 2008. After this strongest earthquake at least three earthquakes with magnitudes 6 and more have happened close to the reported here event: 1.11.1978 М=6.8, 16.12.1983 М6.1 and 17.04.1990 М=6.

    Figure 5
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake
Focal mechanism solutions of the earthquake 5.10.2008 have been calculated with TMC method in NEIC USA, USGS and Harvard Center USA (Global CMT Catalog), they are presented in table 2 and shown on fig. 6, 7. These solutions are close to each other, the type of motion along both planes – uplift. The earthquakes has occurred and the action of compression forces oriented north-south (for USGS the axis of compression was oriented to the north, for HRVD – to the south). Both nodal planes have north-east direction of propagation and rather steep falling. The value of seismic moment Мо obtained in IPC GS RAS from Р-wave spectra at two stations: Obninsk (Δ 29.2º), Yakutsk (Δ 40.2º) makes Мо=1.0* 10** 19 n*m, the value of moment magnitude calculated from Kanamori formula makes Mw = 6.6; The value of seismic moment Мо of the earthquake 5.10.2008 in accordance with USGS makes 1.0* 10** 19 n*m, the value of moment magnitude Mw = 6.6; and in accordance with HRVD Мо=1.11* 10** 19 n*m, Mw = 6.6.
