Macroseismic manifestations |
This earthquake has been felt from Kamchatka to Japan along the all Kuril Islands: in Severo-Kurilsk – with intensity 5-6 MCK, in Kurilsk - with intensity 4-5 MCK, in Petropavlovsk - with intensity 3-4 MCK, in Yuzhno-Kurilsk and Malokurilsk - with intensity 3 MCK of 12 scale МСК-64. The alert of tsunami was announced along all Kuril islands. Nevertheless tsunami did not happen. The alert of tsunami was also sent to Hokkaido, Japan. |
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake |
Focal mechanism solutions of the earthquake 13.01.2007 have been calculated with tensor method in NEIC, USA and with tensor method of centroid (TMC) in Harvard Center (HARVARD), USA. They are presented in table 2 and shown on figures 4-5.
Both methods used in these different centers demonstrated that the type of motion in the origin was the same – fault (with shift components). However some differences exist.
In accordance with NEIC the motion in origin has happened under the action of almost equal forces of compression and expansion oriented to the north. Flat nodal plane NP1 has along meridian direction of propagation, steep falling nodal plane NP2 has latitudinal direction of propagation. The type of motion along NP1 plane – left side shift with vertical components, along NP2 plane – fault with right sided shift components.
In accordance with HARVARD the motion in origin has happened under the action of prevailing forces of expansion oriented to the south-east. Both nodal planes have rather steep and equal falling angles to the horizon (DP=40 and DP=58 degr.). Nodal plane NP1 has latitudinal direction of propagation and NP2 plane – north-eastern direction. The type of motion along both planes – the normal fault (for NP1 – with right sided shift components, for NP2 – with left sided shift components).
Seismic moment Мо of the earthquake 13.01.2007 has been determined in GS RAS with Р-wave spectra registered by IRIS equipment at seismic stations Talaya (TLY), Arti (ARU), Obninsk (OBN) and Kislovodsk (KIV) located at the distances of 33, 56, 66 and 72 degrees respectively. Averaged value of Мо makes 9.4* 10** 20 n*m . Averaged value of Mw calculated from Kanamori formula makes Мw=7.9.
The value of seismic moment Мо from NEIC makes 7.8* 10** 20 n*m, the value of moment magnitude - Mw = 7.9. The value of seismic moment Мо from HARVARD makes 1.65* 10** 21 n*m, the value of moment magnitude - Mw = 8.1.
