Information message about the strong earthquake near the east coast of Kamchatka, November 12, 2013 |
The strong earthquake with M=6.6 has occurred on November 12, 2013 at 07:03 GMT (11:03 Moscow time) near the east coast of Kamchatka. |
Parameters of the earthquake
have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information
Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data
obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS
and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 12 min after
registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM). |
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 28 stations, accurate processing - with data 48 stations. |
Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Petropavlovsk (∆ 2.6º), Severo-Kurilsk (∆ 5.4), Magadan (∆ 7.9º), Seimchan (∆ 9.8º), Bilibino (∆ 13.7º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Mys Shultsa (∆ 23.5º), Talaya (∆ 34.3º), Arti (∆ 53.1º), Obninsk (∆ 61.9º), Kislovodsk (∆ 69.1º).

Epicenter of this earthquake was located 130 km S-S-W of epicenter of strong earthquake on February 20, 2011, M=6.2 |
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake |
Focal mechanism was obtained in IPC GS RAS with signs of initial arrivals of P-waves at 115 stations, including 31 stations which registered the waves of compression (plus signs), and 84 stations which registered the waves of expansion (minus signs). All these stations are located in the interval of epicentral distances of 2–94º and are evenly distributed by azimuth. Focal mechanism solutions in stereographic projection at the lower hemesphere are presented at fig. 4, elements of mechanism are presented in table.2. Fig. 5, 6 present focal mechanism solutions obtained in USGS NEIC with W-phase Moment Tensor technique and in Quick CMT Catalog, USA obtained with CMT technique. All solutions are close. The earthquake has occurred under the action of close in value stresses of compression and expansion oriented E-S-E and N-W respectively.
Nodal plane NP1 in all solutions is vertical (DP=84-90º) with N-E strike (STK=20-29º). Another plane NP2 is flat (DP=4-12º) with S-E strike (STK=140-147º). The type of motion along steeply dipping plane is reverse fault, along the flat plane – nearly horisontal left-lateral strike-slip with components of overthrust.
Seismic moment of the earthquake was obtained in IPC GS RAS with Р-wave spectra at «Obninsk» station(∆61.88º), Mo=8.9*10**18 N*m, Mw=6.6. According to USGS NEIC, Mo=4.87*10**18 N*m, Mw=6.4, according to Quick CMT, Mo=7.08*10**18 N*m, Mw=6.5. |
