Macroseismic manifestations |
According to RIA-Novosti as a result of this earthquake 348 persons were killed. Nearly 20 thousand houses were destroyed or seriously damaged. Almost 90% of buildings were damaged in Avaran town. Chief minister of Balochistan Province Mr. Abdul Ballodge announced emergency situation in the region. Military personnel and border guards were sent to support the rescue teams.
The shocks were felt in Hyderabad, Larkana and other settlements. Indian media reported about weak shocks which were felt in New-Delhi and other parts of northern India.

Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake |
Focal mechanism of this earthquake was calculated in IPC GS RAS on the P-wave first-motions at 125 stations, 79 stations registered compression waves (plus signs) and 46 stations registered expansion waves (minus signs) at distances 8–95º and dispersed rather evenly along the azimuths. The fig.6 shows a focal mechanism solution in stereographic projection at the lower hemisphere, elements of focal mechanism are presented in table.2.
Fig. 7, 8 show focal mechanism derived with W-phase from the estimated moment tensor in USGS NEIC and focal mechanism derived from the estimated CMT in Quick CMT Catalog, USA.
Both solutions are close. This earthquake has occurred under the action of close in value compression stresses oriented to the south and expansion stresses oriented to the east. One nodal planeь NP2 in all solutions is almost vertical (DP=86-89º) and it is oriented north-west (STK=309-322º) – south-east (STK=134º), another nodal plane NP1 is more flat (DP=46-47º) and oriented south-west. The type of motion along NP2 is right hand slips with fault components (IPC GS RAS and СМТ solutions) and reverse fault (USGS NEIC solution). For NP1 – left hand slips (with fault components for IPC GS RAS, reverse fault components for USGS NEIC) and «pure» slip for CMT.
Averaged value of seismic moment was obtained in IPC GS RAS with Р wave spectra registered at two stations: «Obninsk» (∆35.07º) and «Talaya» (∆37.77º) Мо=1.0*10**20 N*m, Mw=7.3. According to USGS NEIC – Мо=1.42*10**20 N*m, Mw=7.7; according to Quick CMT – Мо=4.81*10**20 N*m, Mw=7.7. |
