Information message about sensitive earthquake in Dagestan on April, 2013 |
The sensitive earthquake with M=5.1 has occurred in Dagestan on April 16, 2013 at 12:26 GMT (16:26 Moscow time). |
Parameters of the earthquake
have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information
Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data
obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS
and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 14 min after
registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM). |
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 42 stations, accurate processing - with data 50 stations. |
Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Derbent (∆ 0.6º), Akhty (∆ 0.9º), Botlikh (∆ 1.2º), Vedeno (∆ 1.3º), Grozny (∆ 1.6º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Garni (∆ 3.3º), Neitrino (∆ 3.8º), Kislovodsk (∆ 4º), Dombai (∆ 4.6º), Arkhyz (∆ 4.9º). |

Epicenter |
Fig. 3 presents with red star epicenter of this earthquake, which origin was located in Dagestan at the depth of 10 km, 6 km E-N-E of Murego, 13 km N-E of Kichi-Gamri, 17 km S-W of Izberbash and 65 km S-S-E of Makhachkala. |

Macroseismic manifestations |
In accordance with GS RAS this earthquake was felt in Mamaaul, Baltamakhi, Murguk, Kanasiragi, Burdeki and Kichi-Gamri with intensity 6, in Murego, Nizhny Makharchimakhi, Alkhadzhakent, Gasha, Urakhi, Verkhny Makharchimakhi and Utamysh with intensity 5-6, in Sergokala and Kayakent with intensity 5 and in Makhachkala with intensity 3. |
Historical records |
This eaerhqaueke of April 16, 2013 has occurred near epicenter of the strong 7-8 MSK Kichigamrinsk earthquake of 3.05.1988 (fig.4). Histrorically this place is known as the region of the earthquakes with intensity 6-7. |

Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake |
Focal mechanism solution of this earthquake was calculated in IPC GS RAS with signs of initial arrivals of P-waves at 41 station including 22 stations which registered compression waves (plus signs) and 19 stations which registered expansion waves (minus signs). These stations are located in the interval of epicentral distances of 0.5-60 º and dispersed along the azimuth rather evenly. Focal mechanism solution in stereographic projection at the lower hemisphere is presented at figures 4, 5, this figure also presents focal solution for the origin of another earthquake of 03.05.1988 with Мw=5.3 which was obtained by Harvard Center (USA). Elements of focal solution mechanism of currently reported earthquake of April 16, 2013 are presented in table 2. This earthquake has occurred under the action of compression forces oriented N-N-E. One nodal plane NP2 is steeply falling (DP=75) and propagates N-W, the type of motion along it – uplift with right hand slip component. Another plane NP1 is laying rather flat (DP=40) and propagates N-E, the type of motion along it – left hand slip. |
