Destructive earthquake with M=5.8 which caused victims and destructions has occurred in Turkey on May 19, 2011 at 20:15 GMT (May 20, 2011 at 00:15 Moscow time). |
Parameters of the earthquake
have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information
Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data
obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS
and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 17 min after
registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM). |
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 43 stations, accurate processing - with data 52 stations. |
Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Kislovodsk (∆ 11.3º), Garni (∆ 12.1), Storozhevoe (∆ 13.9º), Kaliningrad (∆ 16.5º), Obninsk (∆ 16.7º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Lovozero (∆ 28.9º), Borovoe (∆ 31.3º), Talaya (∆ 51.6º), Tiksi (∆ 56.3º), Yakutsk (∆ 60.8º). |

Fig.3 presents with red star epicenter of this earthquake which origin was located in western part of Turkey, in Kütahya province, at the depth of 10 km, 86 km W-S-W from Kütahya, 205 km north from Istanbul, 297 km N-W from Antalya and 340 km W-S-W from Ankara - the capital of Turkey. |

Macroseismic manifestations |
In accordance with RIA-Novosti as a result of this earthquake 4 persons were killed and 80 suffered. The underground shock was felt in many regions of the western and central Turkey, including Istanbul. Wisdoms of the earthquake in Kütahya reported, that it was so strong, that the panes in houses cracked. Regional center was left without light and electricity, numerous poor quality houses were destroyed, cracks appeared in some living buildings. Most of local residents spent the night in the street in fear of new shocks. Fig. 4 shared from US Geological Service NEIC presents the map with intensities obtained from phone calls to 1192 respondents in 116 living places.

Historical records |
This earthquake has occurred in seismic active region of Turkey. Another destructive earthquake with M=6.9 has occurred on March 28, 1970 in this region 42 km to the east. Approximately 1000 persons were killed then, mostly from fires which happened when electricity lines were broken and from broken ovens and oil lamps.

Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake |
Focal mechanism solution for the origin of this earthquake which occurred on May 19, 2011 at 20:15 GMT was obtained in IPC GS RAS with first signs of P wave arrivals at 52 stations, including 20 stations which registered the waves of compression (plus signs) and 32 stations which registered the waves of expansion (minus signs). These stations are located in the interval of epicenter distances of 2º-72º, they are distributed non uniformly along the azimuth – most of them are located in 1 and 4 quadrants. Focal mechanism solution in stereographic projection at the lower hemisphere is shown in figure 4, elements of this mechanism are presented in table 2. Table 2 and figures 5, 6 also present focal mechanism solutions of the origin, which were calculated with moment of centroid method in NEIC USA, USGS and with CMT method in Global CMT Catalog, USA. All solutions are almost identical. This earthquake has occurred under the action of N-N-E oriented expansion forces. The type of motion in origin – uplift along both nodal planes with drift components (right side for NP1 and left side for NP2). Both nodal planes are rather steeply falling. Direction of propagation for NP1 – nearly along latitude, for NP2 – N-W.
Seismic moment of this earthquake which occurred on May 19, 2011 was obtained in IPC GS RAS with spectra of Р-waves registered at two stations: «Talaya» (∆ 51.66º), «Arti» (∆ 25.98º), it makes Mo=1.8*10**18 n*m. Averaged value of moment magnitude Mw was calculated with Kanamori formula and makes Mw=6.1.
Seismic moment of this earthquake which occurred on May 19, 2011 in accordance with USGS makes Mo=6.8*10**17 n*m, the value of moment magnitude makes Mw=5.8. The value of seismic moment in accordance with Global CMT Catalog makes Mo=8.63*10**17 n*m and the value of moment magnitude makes Mw=5.9. |
