Reference on current condition of seismicity in the region of ?Northern Caucasus and its neighborhood? | According to the data of Geophysical Survey of RAS for the period from January 1 till April 25, 2000 more than 100 earthquakes with magnitude M more than 1.0-1.5 has taken place in the region of ?Northern Caucasus and its neighborhood?. 15 of them were felt in the settlements with force 2-3 and more MSK. | East part of Northern Caucasus
This is the region mainly belonging to Dagestan Republic. Nearly 70% of all registered earthquakes of Caucasus have been happened here for this period. Four strongest earthquakes with magnitude Ms @ 4 has taken place here on January 28, March 21, April 12 and April 15. They belong to the same origin area which is located approximately in 50 km to the west from Makhachkala town. These earthquakes proceeded the process of seismic energy realization, which beginning was registered here in January 1999 (see “Reference on current condition of seismicity in the Caucasian region for the period from January 1 till August 11 1999” from 15.08.99.). The maximal strikes were noticed in towns Uchkent, Novy Chirkei, Dubki, Buinaksk and Kizilurt, where their value made about 4-5 MSK.
Besides that seismic activity was observed in water area of Caspian sea and in coastal areas (territories of Dagestan, Azerbaijan). The strongest earthquake was registered on April 22 with magnitude M=4.4. Its maximum force was felt in Derbent town with value 4 MSK. Hypocenter of this event is dated to Karabogoz break having the order II. Series of weaker pushes stretching along the western coast of Caspian sea is dated to the Central-Caspian break of the I order.
A number of earthquakes of East Caucasus is noticed in the frontier zone of Dagestan and Azerbaijan, where one can see some breaks of Caucasian spread on the map, including Kahetino- Lechumsky break of the first order.
Western part of Northern Caucasus
Significant seismic activity has been noticed here along the coastal part of Black Sea.
Since February 29 a set from more than 20 earthquakes have taken place here, among them 6 had magnitude 2.7-3.3 and were felt on territory of Large Sochi with force up to 4-5 MSK. The strongest registered event happened on February 29 with magnitude 3.3, it was felt in Sochi with force 4-5 MSK, Adler 3-4 MSK, Lazarevskoye - 3-4 MSK and Dagomis - 2-3 MSK. Hypocenters of this set are located in a zone of crossing between Black Sea and Kahetino - Lechumsky breaks of the first order. Other sets of the earthquakes with intensity in hypocenter up to 7 MSK are known from historical records of this area. Last and most significant seismic set of the earthquakes was noticed in the area of Large Sochi in 1970-1971 with the main event having M=5.1 (December 4 1970).
In April of this year a set of weak strikes with power class K=5 and less was registered by seismic station of Sochi. A rough site of this set - zone is Dagomis town, Baranovka settlement, approximately in 5-7 km from Dagomis and in 10 -12 km from Sochi town in mountain area. For the period from April 20 till April 25 about 20 strikes have taken place. The strikes were accompanied by underground rumble. Employees of seismic station Sochi and local staff of Extraodinary Events Ministry (EEM) carried out explanations among the population of settlement about correct behavior in case of at possible stronger earthquake.
On April 6 the earthquake with magnitude 3.3 has taken place, which was felt in Novorossisk city with value 2-3 MSK, Gelendgik and Anapa - 2 MSK.
Central part of Northern Caucasus
In near to Caucasus region of Stavropol the local network of Kavminvody geodynamic area of GS RAS and geophysical complex of “Gofitskoye” point registered seismic activity in tectonic zone of Stavropol arch at Roshevatsky break of the II-nd order. For the period from April 24 till April 25 three strikes with magnitude 2.8-2.9 were registered. From data of Stavropol center of EEM the strongest of them was felt in Rizdviyany settlement with force up to 3-4 MSK.
In zone of Kavminvody geodynamic area of GS RAS the weak seismicity is still observed in area of junction between Cherkessk and Armaviro-Essentuky breaks of the 1-st order.
These are the main characteristics of seismic activity in Northern Caucasus for the period from January 1 till April 25, 2000.
