Information message about destructive earthquake at the South Greece coast on June 8, 2008 |
The earthquake with M=6.3 has occurred on June 8, 2008 at 12:25 GMT (16:25 Moscow time) near the coast of Southern Greece and it caused victims and destructions. |
Parameters of the earthquake
have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information
Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data
obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS
and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 15 min after
registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM). |
Preliminary processing has been done with data from 35 stations, accurate processing - with data 60 stations. |
Fig. 1 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Apeirantos (∆ 3.4º), Isparta (∆ 7.2º), Kashpersky Gory (∆ 12.5º), Kislovodsk (∆ 17.1º), Garni (∆ 18.2º), Obninsk (∆ 19.9º). Fig. 2 presents fragments of records obtained from digital stations Arti (∆ 30.7º), Borovoe (∆ 36.6º), Ala Archa (∆ 40.2º), Tiksi (∆ 59.5º), Yakutsk (∆ 64.9º), Bilibino (∆ 71º). |

Epicenter |
Fig.3 downloaded from Geological Service USA NEIC, depicts epicenter of this earthquake, which was located at the north-western coast of Peloponnesus Peninsula of Southern Greece at 35 km to the south-west from Patras, at 125 km to the north-north-west from Kalamata and at 200 km to the west from Athens. |

Macroseismic manifestations |
2 people were killed, more than 200 suffered, hundreds of houses destroyed – these are the consequences of the earthquake, felt of the whole territory of Greece, as well as at the south of Italy. Fig.4 downloaded from Geological Service USA NEIC presents the map of intensities. |

Historical records |
Epicenter of the earthquake on June 8, 2008 was located at 140 km to the north from the strong earthquake near the Southern Greece coast on February 14, 2008. |
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake |
Focal mechanism solutions of the earthquake 8.06.2008 were obtained by various seismological centers, they are presented on fig. 5, which was downloaded from EMSC-CSEM. Here: HRVD – Harvard Center, USA; USGS – National Earthquakes Information Center of Geological Service, USA; INGV – Italian National Seismic Network, Italy; ETHZ – Schweizerischer Erdbebendienst (SED) Swiss Seismological Service, Switzerland; AUTH – Seismological Institute, National Observatory of Athens, Greece, NOA – National Observatory of Athens, Greece. These solutions are very similar. Elements of focal mechanism of the origin were calculated with TMC technique in Harvard Center (HARVARD), USA, and in NEIC USA, they are presented in table 2. The motion has occurred under the action of almost the same value compression and expansion forces, oriented to the west and south respectively. Both nodal planes have steep falling position (DP=70-90º). One of them is oriented to the north-eastern direction, the other – to the north-western direction. The type of motion along both planes – slip with uplift components (right side along NP1 and left side along NP2).
The value of seismic moment Мо in accordance with HRVD makes 3.9* 10** 18 n*m, the value of moment magnitude - Mw = 6.3. The value of seismic moment Мо in accordance with USGS NEIC makes 3.1* 10** 18 n*m, the value of moment magnitude - Mw = 6.3.
