Historical records |
Epicenter of this earthquake is located in 103 km N-N-W from catastrophic earthquake of May 12, 2008 with М=8, which killed more than 80000 people.
The strongest earthquake of last time has occurred in this area in the neighboring Yunnan Province on September 07, 2012 in 328 km S-S-E of currently reported epicenter of April 20, 2013. |
Focal mechanism and seismic moment of the earthquake |
Focal mechanism of the origin for this earthquake which occurred on April 20, 2013 at 00:02 was calculated in IPC GS RAS with signs of initial arrivals of P waves at 217 stations, including 204 stations which registered the waves of compression (plus signs), and 13 stations which registered the waves of expansion (minus signs). These stations are located in the interval of epicentral distances of 5–99º and dispersed rather evenly along the azimuths. Focal mechanism solution in stereographic projection at the lower hemisphere is presented at figure 5, elements of this mechanism are presented in table 2. Fig. 6, 7 present focal mechanism obtained in USGS NEIC with USGS Centroid Moment Solution method and solution obtained in Quick CMT Catalog, USA with CMT technique.
Both solutions are close. The earthquake has occurred under the action of S-E oriented compression strengths. Both nodal planes have N-E – S-W direction of propagation. One nodal plane is rather vertical (DP=52-59º), another plane - is more flat (DP=32-38º. The type of motion along both planes – uplift with minor slip components.
Seismic moment of the earthquake was obtained in IPC GS RAS with spectra of Р waves at two stations: «Arti» (∆40.52) and «Obninsk» (∆52.47), it makes Mo=2.2*10**19 N*m, averaged value of moment magnitude Mw was calculated with Kanamori formula and makes Mw=6.8. In accordance with USGS NEIC Mo=1.0*10**19 N*m, Mw=6.6, in accordance with Quick CMT – Mo=1.06*10**19 N*m, Mw=6.6. |
